What vitamin B12 does
Vitamin B12 helps keep your blood and nerve cells healthy and helps your body make DNA. Without enough of it, people can develop megaloblastic anemia, a blood condition that makes people tired and weak.
B12 comes naturally from animal foods such as fish, meat, poultry, eggs and dairy. To absorb it, your body needs stomach acid and a protein made by the stomach called intrinsic factor, which is why some people run low even when they eat enough.
Who is more likely to run low on B12
- Adults over 50, who often have less stomach acid to absorb B12 from food
- People with pernicious anemia or atrophic gastritis
- People who have had stomach or intestinal surgery, including weight-loss surgery
- People with celiac disease or Crohn's disease
- Vegetarians and vegans
- People taking metformin
- People taking acid-reducing medicines such as omeprazole (Prilosec) or lansoprazole (Prevacid)
Signs of low B12
Low B12 can make you feel tired or weak. It can also cause pale skin, heart palpitations, loss of appetite, weight loss, numbness or tingling in the hands and feet, problems with balance, depression, confusion, poor memory, and a sore mouth or tongue.
Your body stores a large supply of B12, so symptoms can take years to appear. Low B12 can damage the nerves even without anemia, which is why it is worth finding and treating early.
How low B12 is checked and treated
A blood test shows your B12 level, and Dr. Munib can order it. A prescription B12 shot is usually used to treat B12 deficiency. Pernicious anemia is usually treated with B12 shots, although very high doses by mouth might also work.
B12 is often promoted for energy and endurance, but it does not provide those benefits in people who already get enough B12. B12 has not been shown to cause harm, even at high doses.
What the visit looks like
A vitamin B12 or B-complex shot is a quick visit at The Pur Health in Irvine. The injection is given into the muscle of the upper arm or buttock, takes a few minutes, and you can go back to your day right after.
If you would like your B12 level checked, Dr. Munib can order a blood test.
Ask us at your visit how often to repeat it.

B12 shot vs B-complex shot
Vitamin B12 is one vitamin. B-complex is a mix of B vitamins. Both are given here as quick injections into the muscle. If you want to know whether you are actually low on B12, Dr. Munib can order a blood test.

Is a B12 shot better than a B12 pill?
For people who cannot absorb B12 well, such as those with pernicious anemia, shots are usually used. Very high doses by mouth might also work for some people.

Lipo-B12 is given at our sister practice, Spectrum Skin Clinic. Plain B12 and B-complex shots are given here.
