Adolescent Health Services in Irvine, CA
At The Pur Health, we understand that adolescence is more than a stage — it’s a critical turning point. Between the ages of 12 and above, young people undergo profound physical, emotional, and mental changes. Our physician-led adolescent health program in Irvine provides comprehensive care tailored to teens’ unique needs, with a focus on clinical excellence, confidentiality, and trust. Whether it’s a sports physical, mental health screening, or hormonal guidance, our team is here to guide your teen through every milestone — safely, respectfully, and compassionately.
What Is Adolescent Health Care?
Adolescent health bridges the gap between pediatrics and adult medicine. It addresses the complex and evolving needs of teens and young adults — not just physically, but emotionally and socially. At The Pur Health, this care model is integrated into our primary care services, ensuring continuity, communication, and clarity. We provide annual exams, health education, screening for early signs of chronic illness or mental health concerns, and supportive counseling on topics ranging from nutrition and sleep to sexuality, substance use, and school stress.
Our clinic is structured to offer adolescents the space to speak openly while involving parents in a supportive, age-appropriate way.

Common Health Concerns in Teens and Young Adults
Adolescents are navigating a world of changes — hormonal, emotional,
academic, and social. At The Pur Health, we commonly address:
Common Health Concerns in Teens and Young Adults
- Acne, hormone shifts, and early puberty
- Menstrual irregularities and period management
- Obesity and nutrition concerns
- Sports injuries and physicals
- Anxiety, depression, and social withdrawal
- Peer pressure, body image, and self-esteem issues
- Early signs of disordered eating
- Sexual health education and STI screening
- Vaccination updates and college immunization forms
Rather than treating these concerns in isolation, we consider how they interact. For instance, acne and sleep issues may be linked to stress or hormonal imbalance. Depression may show up as stomach aches, not sadness. Our approach is comprehensive — and always confidential.

What Happens During a Teen Wellness Visit?
A standard adolescent visit includes a full physical exam, review of medical history, and age-appropriate screenings. Depending on your child’s age or concerns, we may also assess:
- Puberty progression and hormonal changes
- Emotional and mental health status
- Menstrual health and sexual development
- Sleep, diet, exercise, and screen time patterns
- Risk behaviors (substance use, peer influence, bullying)
We create space for both the parent and the teen to speak privately with the provider. This confidentiality is crucial to building trust — especially when addressing topics like sexual activity, mental health, or family dynamics. Our physicians are trained to handle these conversations with care and clinical precision.
Why Choose The Pur Health for Teen Care?
- Doctor-Led Care: Every visit is overseen by a physician with experience in adolescent medicine and primary care. We don’t rely on quick urgent-care visits or large pediatric practices that rotate providers.
- Whole-Child Approach: We look beyond symptoms to understand root causes, integrating mental, physical, and social health for better long-term outcomes.
- Safe, Judgment-Free Environment: Teens need space to talk. We create that space with compassion, confidentiality, and clinical rigor.
- Family Partnership: You’re not left out of the process. We work closely with parents while respecting the growing independence of the adolescent.
- Continuity of Care: Our clinic provides care throughout adolescence — from puberty to college transitions — building deep trust over time.

Which vaccines does my teen need?
Ages 11 to 12 and 16 are the two main vaccine checkpoints for teens. Bring your teen's vaccine record and Dr. Munib will tell you what is due.
Ages 11 to 12
Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough), HPV, and the meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY).
Age 16
A MenACWY booster. The MenB vaccine can also be given from 16 to 18 after a talk with your doctor.
HPV doses
Two doses if started before 15, three doses if started at 15 or older.
Every year
A flu vaccine.
Sports physicals for teens
A sports physical checks that it is safe to play and looks for problems that could show up under exertion, such as heart symptoms, asthma or an old injury that never healed.
- Book a few weeks before the season so there is time for any follow-up.
- Bring the school or league form and your teen's vaccine record.
- Tell us about fainting or chest pain during exercise, or a family member who died suddenly before 50. These need a closer look.
- Bring glasses or contacts for the vision check.
A sports physical is narrower than a yearly checkup. Many families book one visit that covers both.
When should a teen see a doctor about her periods?
Periods are often irregular in the first year or two. Some patterns are worth a visit:
- No period by age 15
- Periods that come more often than every 21 days or less often than every 45 days, 3 years after they started
- A period that lasts more than 7 days
- Soaking a pad or tampon every 1 to 2 hours, or passing large clots
- Pain that keeps her home from school
Heavy periods can cause low iron. Dr. Munib may check a blood count and iron level.
Anxiety and depression in teens
Teens 12 and older are screened for depression at their yearly visit, and anxiety screening is part of care too. Signs can look like irritability, falling grades, sleeping too much or too little, stomach aches or pulling away from friends.
Dr. Munib talks with your teen privately, checks for medical causes, and helps arrange counseling or other care when needed.
If your teen talks about suicide or self-harm, call or text 988 (the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline) or call 911.

Frequently asked questions
Questions are welcome. Our team is happy to help before you book.
Call (949) 647-5234What’s the difference between adolescent and pediatric care?
Pediatrics typically focuses on children under 12. Adolescent medicine addresses more complex psychosocial issues and developmental transitions, including mental health, puberty, and reproductive health.
Does my teen still need yearly checkups?
Yes. Even if your teen feels healthy, annual visits allow us to screen for hidden issues like depression, anemia, scoliosis, or early signs of diabetes.
Do you offer STI testing for teens?
Yes. We offer confidential STI testing and education for teens, beginning at age 13, per clinical guidelines and California law.
What if my teen doesn’t want to talk to the doctor?
That’s common. We use standard screening tools and a non-judgmental approach to build trust over time. Many teens who were initially reluctant return asking to talk alone with the doctor.
Do you treat transgender or questioning teens?
We offer respectful, individualized care for all adolescents. If needed, we can refer to LGBTQ+ affirming specialists for further support.

For most visits a parent or guardian needs to give consent for a teen under 18. Under California law, teens 12 and older can get some services, such as mental health care and STI testing, confidentially.
Can my teen get a sports physical here?
Yes. Dr. Munib does sports physicals and completes school and league forms for teens 12 and older.
Does my teen need a Pap smear?
No. Pap tests start at 21. Most teens also do not need a pelvic exam unless they have symptoms.
Is the HPV vaccine for boys too?
Yes. The HPV vaccine is recommended for all teens at 11 to 12, and it can be given up to 26.
How much is a teen visit without insurance?
A cash-pay visit is $190 for new patients and $150 for returning patients. We are also in-network with most PPO plans.
When are irregular periods a concern in teens?
No period by 15, cycles shorter than 21 or longer than 45 days after the first few years, periods longer than 7 days, or very heavy bleeding are all reasons to book a visit.
