Which health screenings do I need at my age?

Screenings are matched to your age, sex and risk, not given to everyone the same way. These are the national recommendations Dr. Munib starts from for adults at average risk. Your family history, smoking history or results may move a test earlier or make it more frequent.

Ages 18 to 39

Blood pressure at every visit and at least every 3 to 5 years. A one-time hepatitis C test and an HIV test. Cervical cancer screening from 21. STI testing for sexually active women 24 and younger, and anyone at higher risk.

Ages 40 to 49

Yearly blood pressure. A mammogram every 2 years for women from 40. Blood sugar testing from 35 if you are overweight. Colon cancer screening from 45. Cholesterol to estimate your heart risk.

Ages 50 to 64

All of the above, plus a yearly lung cancer CT scan from 50 if you have a 20 pack-year smoking history and smoke now or quit within 15 years. Men 55 and older can talk through whether a PSA test makes sense for them.

Ages 65 and older

A bone density scan for women from 65, or earlier after menopause if you have risk factors. A one-time ultrasound for an abdominal aortic aneurysm for men 65 to 75 who have ever smoked.

Mood is part of a checkup at every age. Adults are screened for depression, and adults under 65 for anxiety.

What blood tests are part of a preventive checkup?

A preventive panel is built around your age and risk. The tests most adults need at some point are:

  • Cholesterol (a lipid panel), to estimate heart and stroke risk
  • Blood sugar or A1c, to check for prediabetes and diabetes
  • Hepatitis C, once for adults 18 to 79
  • HIV, at least once for adults 15 to 65
  • STI tests if you are at risk

More tests are not always better. For adults with no symptoms, routine thyroid tests, vitamin D levels and a resting EKG for low-risk adults are not recommended as screening, because they can lead to follow-up tests and treatment you do not need. If you have symptoms, Dr. Munib tests for them.

Is a preventive checkup covered by insurance?

Most health plans cover recommended preventive services, such as an annual checkup, screenings and routine vaccines, with no copay when you see an in-network doctor. We are in-network with most PPO plans.

If you bring up a new problem during the checkup, such as a rash or knee pain, that part may be billed as a separate visit and your copay or deductible can apply. Ask us if you are not sure.

Without insurance

A cash-pay visit is $190 for new patients and $150 for returning patients. Labs are paid to the lab at its self-pay price.

HSA and FSA

HSA and FSA cards are accepted.

Which vaccines do adults need?

Your checkup is the time to catch up on vaccines. Bring any records you have. Dr. Munib reviews them and tells you which are due and where to get them.

  • Flu vaccine every year
  • Tetanus booster (Td or Tdap) every 10 years
  • HPV vaccine through age 26, and for some adults 27 to 45 after a talk with your doctor
  • Shingles vaccine (2 doses) from age 50
  • Pneumococcal (pneumonia) vaccine from age 50

How to prepare for your preventive checkup

  • Bring a list of your medicines and supplements, with doses.
  • Know your family history: heart disease, diabetes and cancers in parents and siblings, and the age they were found.
  • Bring past lab results, vaccine records and the dates of your last mammogram, Pap test or colon screening.
  • Write down the 2 or 3 questions that matter most to you.
  • You usually do not need to fast for a cholesterol test. Dr. Munib will tell you if a test you need requires fasting.

Frequently asked questions

Questions are welcome. Our team is happy to help before you book.

Call (949) 647-5234

How often should I get a physical?

Once a year works well for most adults. Some screenings are needed less often, so Dr. Munib tells you which tests are due at each visit.

At what age should I start colon cancer screening?

At 45 for adults at average risk, and earlier with a family history or symptoms. A colonoscopy is one option, and stool-based tests done at home are another.

When should women start mammograms?

Every 2 years from age 40 to 74 for women at average risk. Women with a strong family history may need to start earlier.

Do I need to fast before my blood work?

Usually not for a cholesterol test. Some tests do need fasting, and Dr. Munib will tell you when you get your lab order.

Should men get a PSA test?

Men 55 to 69 can choose after talking through the possible benefits and harms with their doctor. Routine PSA screening is not recommended from age 70.

Is an annual physical free with insurance?

Most plans cover a yearly preventive visit with no copay when you see an in-network doctor. New problems discussed at the same visit can be billed separately.

How much is a physical without insurance?

A cash-pay visit is $190 for new patients and $150 for returning patients. Labs and imaging are paid separately at self-pay prices.

Do you do physicals for teens?

Yes. Dr. Munib sees teens 12 and older for yearly checkups and sports and school physicals.
